State of the Month – Kentucky




Here is the next instalment of my monthly feature going through the States of the United States in alphabetical order to check out how they got named, what their flag is like and other things of interest. 


Location – Kentucky has borders with 7 other States.

Origin of name – Kentucky is one of 4 US States that is a Commonwealth.  It was originally part of Virginia but split off to become the 15th State in 1792.  The State is named after River Kentucky.



Nicknames – Bluegrass State


Flag


Capital – Frankfort (population only about 25 thousand!)(sounds German) (Louisville is the largest city)


Flower – Goldenrod


Bird - Cardinal



Signature foods – Country fried steak, fried catfish, fried green tomatoes and chicken and dumplings.


Famous places to visit – Mammoth Cave National Park (the world's longest cave system), Lake Cumberland (a very large artificial lake), Red River Gorge and Fort Knox is in the State (don't know if you can visit though) and of course the Kentucky Derby is very famous.

Famous businesses/brands – KFC (of course), over 95% of the world's bourbon is made in Kentucky


Famous people from Kentucky – Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Daniel Boone, Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Muhammed Ali, Loretta Lynn, The Everly Brothers. Colonel Sanders is not from Kentucky – he was born in Indiana. Vernon Rudolph was the founder of Krispy Kreme donuts and was born in Kentucky.
