The Beach at Trouville – in Art

The pic at the top shows the beach at Trouville as it is today. It is in Normandy, France and is still a fashionable area.  This beach has been painted several times by famous painters including, Monet, Degas and Boudin.

This painting is imaginatively titled The Beach at Trouville.  It is by Monet (of water lily fame).  The figure on the left is probably Monet's wife Camille.  This painting dates from 1870.  I find it almost like a dashed off photo – it doesn't seem particularly composed.  In the middle of the painting there is an empty chair.  Fancy wearing that much clothing on the beach!

Beach Scene by Degas is quite different.  Much of it is thought to have been painted in the studio rather than at the beach.  It shows a young girl and her maid at the beach.

Boudin painted several Trouville paintings.  I have chosen to show you the equally imaginatively named The Beach at Trouville.  This shows quite a scene – all the fashionable ladies and men sitting quite formally at the seaside.  This painting was done in 1864.
