Madame Moitessier by Ingres

The original of this 1856 painting by Ingres can be found in the National Gallery in London.  This lady is the wife of a banker – clearly a wealthy one.  It took the artist a long time to finish – and apparently involved several changes of clothing.

You see the lady front on and in profile in the mirror – a cunning device by the painter.  For me the dress is the star.
