Motuihe Island

Motuihe

Motuihe Island is a very small recreational island in the Waitemata Harbour, one of Auckland's two harbours.  Generations of Auckland children, including myself, went on the ferry to Motuihe to have school or church picnics.

Motuihe has 2 beaches – one on each side of the island – so one of the beaches will be sheltered even if the other one isn't.  And it takes less than 10 minutes to walk from one beach to the other.

Beach on Motuihe Island

Lots of boaties also anchor up at Motuihe to swim, picnic etc.  Even quite large gin palaces as well as the more modest fizz boats.

Fantastic!

PS  in checking up for writing this post, I discovered that I have always previously spelled Motuihe wrong!  Motu means "island" in Maori.

Food on Friday: Vanilla and Saffron

 ON

We are going to make a lovely collection today – of dishes using either vanilla or saffron – or maybe even both!  I 'm really looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

To add your goodies to the collection, just put your name and the name of the dish into the first Mr Linky box and paste the url for your post about it into the second box.

I have made up this Pinboard and will be pinning the links to it as they come in – or as soon as I can anyway!  By visiting or following the Pinboard you will be able to choose easily which dishes you want to check out in more detail.

Girl with a Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Stieg Larsson book cover

I have only just got around to reading The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo – I know, it's been out for simply ages!  I ended up enjoying the book – but it does get off to quite a slow start – and it was only my normal stubbornness that made me keep on reading.

What really makes the book is the amazing female protagonist – Lisbeth.  I won't say much about her just in case you haven't read the book yet.

One warning – there are a couple of gruesome sex scenes in the book – which are not gratuitous – but still shocking.

But, I'm still really glad I read it and I will be reading the next book in the trilogy soon.

If you scramble the letters in "blamed" you can get Bedlam which matches "uproar".  Uproar is also the hint that an anagram is involved so that word in the clue is doing double duty.

Macerated Berry Salad

Macerated Berry Salad by Carole's Chatter

In honour of the forthcoming Food on Friday about Vanilla, here is an extremely simple but spectacular dish which is enhanced by the addition of Vanilla Extract.  I think this looks appetising despite the rather pedestrian stainless steel bowl!

Just hull your strawberries and put them into a bowl with raspberries and blueberries.  Pour over them some limoncello and kirsch together with the vanilla extract.  I think the lemon flavour in the limoncello is really good but you could use any liqueur or spirit you have on hand (except milk based ones).

Stir and leave to macerate in the fridge for at least 2 hours.

I like to serve this with whipped cream and/or ice cream.

Braque

Georges Braque

Georges Braque (1882-1963) was a French painter.  He, together with Picasso, created what became known as Cubism.

Georges Braque

He started out as a house painter like his father!  Then when he took up painting he was first an Impressionist, then a Fauvist before being inspired by Picasso.

Georges Braque

He was the first living artist ever to have work exhibited in the Louvre.

His works are both weird and wonderful.

Georges Braque

On the 31st of August he would have been 131.
